WELCOME TO THE MANCHESTER 2009 E-ZINE!

Welcome to the tenth New England Regional Genealogical Conference 2009 E-zine, providing information on the Tenth New England Regional Genealogical Conference. Please share it with your friends and associates – and anyone else you feel may be interested in attending the Conference.

ABOUT NERGC 2009

Discovering Family Treasures, coming up April 22-26 at the Expo Center of New Hampshire and Radisson Hotel in Manchester, is the tenth New England Regional Genealogical Conference and includes genealogical lectures, seminars and workshops, exhibits, an Ancestors Road Show, a Society Fair, and a silent auction.  What’s more, the luncheons, and banquets, and even the hotel elevator are great places to find lots of other folks with whom you can share information on ancestors and research!

REGISTRATION UPDATE

Over 620 have now registered for the Conference!  Still, there’s plenty of room for more!  Although the Early Bird registration deadline has passed, at $135 Discovering Family Treasurers remains a bargain when compared to the registration fees of other conferences.

The Conference Registration Brochure is available in PDF format on the NERGC Web page, www.NERGC.org.  Print out or bookmark the brochure and plan your conference experience. Then, either

  • Fill out the Registration Form on page 12 of the brochure and mail it with your check to: Mary Choppa, NERGC Registration, 131 Concord St., Nashua, NH 03064.

OR

  • Take advantage of our Online Registration Service. You'll be guided through five screens to register for the Conference. (Please use a separate registration for each person attending the conference. If you have a companion who wishes to join you for meals only, you will be able to order additional meals within your registration.)

If you prefer, you can still obtain and use a traditional printed Conference Registration Brochure.  Brochures have been distributed to Participating Societies and to many local libraries, museums, and senior centers.

DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THE ENTIRE CONFERENCE?

If you (or a friend) don’t have time for the entire Conference, single day registrations are available at $90 per day.

YOU CAN STILL ADD LUNCHEONS, BANQUETS, AND WORKSHOPS

If you've already registered for the Conference but you weren’t sure about meals or workshops, it's not too late to add them!  If you registered online, you can access your account and add items. If you haven't signed up yet, there will also be a place for walk-ins to register.  Keep in mind though that you should pre-register if you want to attend a meal or workshop.

Registration schedule:

Thursday, April 23, 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Friday, April 24, 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 25, 7:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m.

If you are registered to attend Librarian/Teacher Day, see the Librarians and Teachers Day Update section, below.

LIBRARIANS AND TEACHERS DAY UPDATE

There is still room in our special program for librarians, library trustees, friends of libraries, and teachers on Thursday, April 23.  The cost is $35 and includes lunch compliments of ProQuest. The flyer for this special day is available on the NERGC 2009 home page at http://www.nergc.org/2009. We invite you to download a copy to post in your libraries, distribute to other librarians and teachers, and encourage you to spread the word by sending the link to others.  More information is available at http://www.nergc.org/2009/libteachday.htm.

Registration for Librarians and Teachers Day (LTD) attendees will be outside the ballroom beginning at 8:30 on Thursday.  Anyone who registers will be receiving email instructions the week prior to the event. The program will start promptly at 9:30. If you are registered for the remainder of the conference (Friday through Sunday), you will also need to register in the main registration area.

Please remember that LTD attendees receive a free lunch, compliments of ProQuest, that is not available to conference attendees. You will have a special conference badge to designate this. This badge does not grant admission to the small number of afternoon sessions that are part of the main conference prior to the Society Fair since the attendees will be attending the Librarians and Teachers sessions.

OVERFLOW ACCOMMODATIONS AVAILABLE AT HILTON GARDEN INN

The Hilton Garden Inn, 101 Commercial Street, Manchester, New Hampshire, is our overflow hotel, three blocks from the Conference site.  It will honor $125 night registrations if guests self-identify as part of the NERGC Conference.  A link directly to the Hilton Garden Inn's booking page from the NERGC web page will be coming soon.  A free shuttle is available through the Hilton for those who wish to go to local destinations.

A TRANSPORTATION NOTE

The bus terminal of Manchester for Vermont Transit Bus Lines and for Concord Trailways Buses is IMMEDIATELY behind the Radisson Hotel's garage. This means that those coming from Vermont, Massachusetts, and other New England states can make it to Manchester by alternative transport. In fact, you can exit the bus station and walk right through the garage to the hotel (perfect for inclement weather).

PARKING

The Center for New Hampshire parking garage, 65 Granite St., serves both the Radisson Hotel and the Expo Center.  The parking rate for hotel guests with approved validation is $8.00 per day with in and out privileges.  The parking charge is added to the hotel bill.

For hotel non-guests, parking is $3.00 for up to one hour; $4.00 for one to two hours; $5.00 for two to three hours; $6.00 for three to four hours; $9.00 for four to six hours; $12.00 for eight to ten hours, and $16.00 for ten to twelve hours.  Event rate, single entry, is $15.00 per day

DON’T MISS OUT ON THE LUNCHEONS AND BANQUETS!

Attendees of past conferences provided feedback showing that the sharing, socializing, and networking that occurs at the meals was one of the most meaningful parts of the Conference.  Don’t miss the opportunity for convenient, delicious meals, socialization, and networking with other participants.  Choose from a Regular Luncheon at $26.00 or one of the intimate Hosted Luncheons ($39.00), where you can converse with professionals such as James Hansen, FASG; Thomas W. Jones, Ph.D., CG, CGL, FASG; Colleen Fitzpatrick; and D. Joshua Taylor.  And no one will be disappointed with the informative and entertaining speakers featured at this year’s banquets!  Each banquet is $40.00.

See the “Social Activities” section of your Conference Registration Form to reserve your spot!

ROAMING 'ROUND MANCHESTER --IN SEARCH OF TREASURE

For those who enjoy discovering research facilities & museums wherever they travel will be pleasantly surprised with the many “treasures” they can find in Manchester.

Just blocks from the conference center is the main branch of the Manchester City Library [Pine St.].  On the top floor is the New Hampshire Room where history and genealogy research can be done.  Though the library is open Mon-Sat 8:30-5:30/8:30, there are limited hours for the research room.  (www.manchester.lib.nh.us

Nearby on Amherst St. is the Manchester Historic Association Research Center. This historic building houses their Research Library, which is only open Wed & Sat (10-4).   Admission to this facility is $6 (seniors $5), but this will also admit you to a same-day visit to their Millyard Museum [Bedford St—behind the conference area].  Along with their permanent exhibits, there is a special exhibit for “Abraham Lincoln—Manchester Remembers” (in celebration of our 16th President's 200th birthday).  This museum is open Wed-Sat (10-4).  Added note:  In this same building on the fourth floor is the SEE SCIENCE CENTER, which is open daily 10-4 and admission is $6.  (www.manchesterhistoric.orgwww.see-sciencecenter.org)

The Franco American Centre on Concord St. houses art, museum artifacts, and an extensive research library which is focused around French history & heritage in North America.  (www.francoamericancentrenh.com

Unique to Manchester is the America's Credit Union Museum, which is [across the river] at 418-420 Notre Dame Ave.   Their focus is to commemorate the founders and the site of America's first credit union whose roots began in 1908.  Hours are Mon, Wed. & Fri. 10-noon and 1-4.  Also, there is the Scouting Museum & Library on Blondin Road (closer to the airport), but until summer it's only open SAT.

As with the various museums and research facilities, Manchester can boast of many historic buildings.  Several are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, such as The Zimmerman House at the Currier Gallery of Art, the General John Stark House, the Ash St. Inn, and the New Hampshire State Armory—to name a few.

With all the conference will have to offer it'll be hard to find time to “Roam 'round Manchester,” but treasures await those who're interested in exploring.

A SPECIAL TREASURE:  THE AMERICAN-CANADIAN GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

The American Canadian Genealogical Society (www.acgs.org) at 4 Elm St., next to the Blessed Sacrament Church, is THE library for Acadian and French Canadian research.  They'll be offering extended hours during the Conference, as well as having presenting orientation workshops (a.m. & p.m.) on Wednesday (pre-registration necessary).

Major holdings of the ACGS library include the digitized version of the Drouin microfilm collection, a collection of Catholic Church records, indexed in Répertoires, for the provinces of Québec, Ontario and New Brunswick. Many census records are available for New Brunswick. Limited resources are available for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. There are also extensive records of marriages in churches of New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut and New York as well as a few records of the Midwestern United States, Illinois and Pacific Northwest. Microfilm holdings include vital records of New Hampshire to 1900; Vermont, 1760 to 1908; Massachusetts marriages and births, 1840-1905; the Loiselle file of Québécois marriages; the Moncton (Archdiocese) file, which contains church records of Westmorland and Kent Counties, New Brunswick; and church records of Charlesvoix County, Québec to 1908.

Special hours for the week of the Conference are:

Wednesday, Friday – 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Thursday – 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Saturday – 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

ANOTHER KIND OF TREASURE HUNT

GPS receivers can keep track of relevant waypoints.  For those interested in hunting and fishing, these points might be a hunting stand or a fishing hole.  For genealogists, it might be an ancestor’s headstone or cellar hole.  Beyond their practical applications, GPS receivers can be used in the outdoor adventure game of Geocaching, a high-tech version of hide and seek.  By visiting and registering at www.geocaching.com, you can obtain the coordinates of all the many caches hidden in Manchester.  But even if you’re not into Geocaching, you might want to spend some time with your GPS unit discovering these interesting statues and memorials in Manchester, part of the “Bronze and Stone” Geocache, GCHAC1:

City Hall, N42 59.458 W71 27.826.  A statue of Gen. John Stark who fought at Bennington and Bunker Hill and who gave New Hampshire its motto, "Live Free or Die".

Pulaski Park, N42 59.701 W71 27.514.  An equestrian statue of Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski.

Victory Park, N42 59.541 W71 27.620.  Manchester’s World War I memorial.

Bronstein Park, N42 59.458 W71 27.370.  Memorial to the Spanish-American war and other military campaigns in Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and China from 1898 to 1902.

Veterans Memorial Park, N42 59.318 W71 27.718 (right across the street from the Radisson and Expo Center).

The Millyard, N42 59.499 W71 28.053.  Statue of “The Mill Girl,” symbol of those who made Manchester a productive industrial city.

SPACE STILL AVAILABLE AT WORKSHOPS

In addition to the lecture sessions, a variety of special workshops are being offered at the Conference.  Each workshop is 2-3 hours in length and requires an additional fee.  In E-zine 8 we mentioned the Identifying and Preserving Family Photographs workshop (F-213) to be presented by Maureen Taylor, the Photo Detective, and David Mishkin, a nationally-known photo restorer and preservationist. In E-zine 9 we highlighted Leaping Over the Immigration Hurdle with Leslie Huber (F-233) and Cemetery Research with Donna Walcovy (S-307).

If you have French-Canadian ancestry, don’t miss the opportunity to be a part of the Accent Your Research workshop presented on Wednesday, April 22 at the Radisson by members of the American-Canadian Genealogical Society, who will explore the resources available at the ACGS library for French Canadian and non-French research, followed by an afternoon or evening of research at the library.  Participants will receive a CD containing Tricks & Tips.  A.M. Workshop (10:00 – noon), W-101:  $25.00.  P.M. Workshop (2:00 – 4:00), W-102, $25.00.

A reminder that if you’re not yet registered at the hotel by the time your ACGS workshop begins, you’ll have to pay to park either on the street or in the garage.  If you wish to go to the ACGS library after the workshop, please plan to use your own vehicle or carpooling.  The library is located at 4 Elm Street on the corner of West Baker and next to Blessed Sacrament Church.  It is about two miles south of the Radisson Hotel.  Parking is in the back of the building, as is the main entrance.

For out-of-town workshop attendees who do not have a vehicle, ACGS will try to arrange a shuttle to get them to the ACGS library and back to the hotel.  Watch for additional information in the next E-zine or in the Conference Blog, www.nergc2009.blogspot.com/.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

Special Interest Groups, held on Thursday night of the Conference, offer participants an opportunity to get together with others with similar interests and discuss ideas for genealogy research on a certain topic.  From DNA to Scandinavian Research; from GenealogyBank to Scotch-Irish Research, you’re sure to find a “treasure” relating to your area of interest. Check out the groups already in place at http://www.nergc.org/2009/specialinterestgroups.htm. Or, if you’re interested in hosting one of these informal groups, contact Leslie Huber.

ANCESTORS ROAD SHOW UPDATE

ANCESTOR ROAD SHOW appointments can now be scheduled via e-mail. Check the ROAD SHOW link on the NERGC website http://www.nergc.org/2009/roadshow.htm for instructions.  All consultants, with a description of their areas of expertise as well as their ROAD SHOW time slots, are posted. Sign up now to get your first choice of consultant.

DISCOVERING EXHIBIT HALL TREASURES

The Exhibit Hall is now sold out.  Just goes to show that the exhibitors know that the NERGC conference is one of the best for genealogists, historians, libraries, and historical societies.  We have six (6) new exhibitors that have never exhibited with us before, and they are anxious to show you their new products and services.  See the updated floor plan at http://www.nergc.org/2009/exhibits.htm.

Also, please make sure you stop by and visit the NERGC 2011 booth.  Here you will find out where the next conference will be, learn a little bit about the city sponsoring the conference, and perhaps even get a chance to chat with some of the new conference organizers.  Just remember that each year the NERGC conferences keep getting bigger and better and 2011 should be no exception.

The Exhibit Hall will have its Grand Opening on Thursday April 23rd from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.  It will open on Friday, April 24th at 8:15 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m.  Then on Saturday, the Exhibit Hall will be open from 8:15 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  The unopposed exhibitor times are on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon and on Saturday also from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon.

There are so many reasons to visit us in the Exhibit Hall, and we realize that.  That is why we have arranged to have so much unopposed exhibitor time.  Tom and I join all the exhibitors that are looking forward to seeing you all in the Exhibit Hall.

David Mishkin
Tom Wilber
Exhibitor Co-Chairs

A REMINDER FOR EXHIBITORS

Exhibitor Co-Chairs David Mishkin and Tom Wilbur have sent four e-letters to exhibitors that contain information needed for set-up including schedules and photographs of the loading docks and passages into the Exhibit Hall. SER, our conference decorator, has also sent e-mails to exhibitors.  Be sure to re-check your in-box for this important information.

UPS SHIPPING AVAILABLE AT CONFERENCE

We’ve arranged to have UPS join us at the Conference as we have for the past few Conferences.  They will occupy booth numbers 507 and 509 and will be there on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday.  Just in case those books you bought are too heavy to carry around, you can ship them home during the Conference!  In addition, if exhibitors would like to have them ship anything -- even your entire display -- they can do that for you as well!

DOOR PRIZES

This year we’ve restructured the door prize process.  There will be a large poster either just outside or just inside the Exhibit Hall that states which vendors are providing door prizes and what they are donating.  Each Conference attendee will receive a block of door prize tickets during registration.  Fill out each ticket with your name, address and phone number.  Then all you need to do to win is stop off at the exhibitors’ booths and drop off the tickets in a bucket that NERGC will supply. At the designated time, vendors will draw tickets and will notify the winners.

50/50 SILENT AUCTION

NERGC is presenting its first silent auction this year. Fifty percent of the winning bid goes to the original owner of the item(s). The remaining 50% will go to NERGC.

The auction will begin Friday morning when the Expo Center opens. Friday afternoon the auction will close and winning bidders may pick up and pay for their items. Saturday morning a new auction will begin. If your item(s) received no bids Friday, they will be automatically entered in Saturday’s auction. Check the daily Newsletter at the conference for details and times.

You can bid online or in person at the Expo Center during the auction. Items will be displayed on tables in the 50/50 Silent Auction area next to the Ancestors Road Show.

All online bidders need to be registered prior to bidding. Those attendees wishing to bid may use their registration number as their bidding ID. For those who cannot attend, you will need to email the 50/50 Silent Auction coordinator, Drew Bartley, at drew@yourgenealogist.com. This is also the email you will use to place all bids online. To receive an online bidder’s ID, please email your name, organization (if appropriate), mailing address, email, and a phone number where you can be reached.

All items or services received in advance of Friday’s auction will appear in Lot #1. Links to downloadable pdf files will be provided online for as many items as possible. These links become live at the date and time to be announced. Each file will contain a description of the item, its number, and a minimum bid for that item.

Bids that are sent via email to drew@yourgenealogist.com should have the following:

  • Name of item
  • Item number
  • Your ID number
  • Minimum bid
  • Maximum bid

For those bidders not present, this will be the procedure. If you bid a range, the lowest bid in a rounded dollar amount will be bid on your behalf. If there is a competing bid, your bid will be increased to $1 over the previous bidder up to your designated maximum. If you are the winner, we will ship your item(s) to you with the bill for the item(s) and the cost of shipping and handling.

Place all online bids to drew@yourgenealogist.com

Bring Your Items to the Auction!

Anyone wishing place material or services in Friday and/or Saturday’s auctions should contact Drew Bartley at drew@yourgenealogist.com and arrange to have the items or certificates (for things like hours of research time) at the Expo Center by Friday and/or Saturday morning. Items, groups of items, or services should have a retail value of at least $10. Minimum bids suggested by the original owner should be no lower than $5. The original owner will receive half of the winning bid and NERGC the other half. Payments by attendees should be made at the end of the auction when picking up your new items or certificates for services such as research hours. Payments by remote bidders should be made by check payable to NERGC, Inc., and sent to our Treasurer at the address provided on your bidding ID.

DISSEMINATING GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION

NERGC planners are pleased to announce the availability of display tables for Genealogical and Historical society brochures from across the nation.  We wish to fulfill one of our missions to disseminate genealogical information.  If you have material (membership brochures, product sales info, or meeting and event calendars for the next year or two) that is appropriate for handouts at this conference, please follow the shipping instructions below:

Send to:

NERGC 2009/Pauline Cusson
c/o ACGS
P.O. Box 6478
Manchester, NH 03108-6478

All material must be received in Manchester by April 20th and not before April 1, 2009.

PUT THE SOCIETY FAIR ON YOUR NERGC CALENDAR!

Almost thirty genealogical, family and historical societies will be exhibiting their wares on Thursday evening from 5:00 -7:00 p.m., right before the trade show opens.  It promises to be a great time to learn about different groups that might be in a position to help your research.  It will also be a wonderful time to meet your friends and have a bit of social fun.  If your society would like to join the Fair we have room for only two more exhibitors, so let Ralph Wadleigh (whplar@comcast.net) know right away of your wish to be a participant.  Don’t be left out!!!

VOLUNTEERS ARE A NERGC FAMILY TREASURE

We still need volunteers to have full coverage during the conference.  Our most important needs are as follows:

  • Session Door Monitor for certain sessions – choose sessions you are already attending
  • Session Host/Introduction for certain sessions – choose sessions you are already attending
  • Audio Visual -- need volunteers with a general knowledge of computers, LCD projectors, and general A/V is recommended.  Thursday 7:45 a.m. - 12:00 Noon & 1:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m., Friday 1:15 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Saturday 1:15 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Signage – need volunteers with some computer expertise as well as runners to help change signs during session for the next session, etc.

For each hour volunteered, you will receive a raffle ticket for daily raffles.  If you are bringing a spouse or friend along for the ride, please ask if they will help out as well --they don’t have to be registered for the Conference to volunteer for non session volunteer opportunities.

Please e-mail Volunteer Chair Christine Bard at bardc@comcast.net for a list of volunteer opportunities.

SHARE YOUR EVALUATION RECOMMENDATIONS!

NERGC 2009 will give you ample opportunities to make recommendations to improve your Conference experience while on-site as well as for future Conferences.  On-site, you will see suggestion and comment boxes where evaluation volunteers will be collecting your input and working to improve your experience during the Conference.  So, feel free on-site to jot a comment and add it to the Suggestions and Comments boxes.

To share your perspective during the planning process or to ask a question about the on-site and online process, feel free to contact Pamela Roberts, Evaluation Committee Chair- Phone evenings: 860-429-8751 or Email: drpampt@charter.net.

QUERIES UPDATE

The QueryColumn has been completed and forwarded to Syllabus Chair Lisa Vasas for incorporation into that volume.  This section came to 12 pages this year, and your Queries Editor is most appreciative of the questions that were submitted.  Nearly $300 was received in Query Fees and will be applied to the General Income of the 2009 Conference.

On-site, the Queries will be stationed in a well-traveled area.  Syllabus paidQueryColumn pages will be posted in a spread for all to see without having to turn pages.  Additionally, all attendees and visitors will have an opportunity to post free, hand-written items on the QueryBoard, by filling out the forms as supplied, and affixing them to the Board.  The QueryColumn will, of course, be published as part of the conference syllabus, while the QueryBoard postings will be seen only by those at Manchester.  The Queries area provides a good meeting-place for conference-goers and, at some point, every attendee will pass by this popular spot. Come and say 'hello"!

See you there!
Janet Horton Wallace; Queries Chair
